Viveka

‘Dear Uddhava, the law of this world is: ‘only the one who has Viveka (intelligence through discrimination), wins’.

While Duryodhana had viveka, Dharmaraj lacked it. That is why Dharmaraj lost’.‘While Duryodhana had lots of money and wealth to gamble, he did not know how to play the game of dice. That is why he used his Uncle Shakuni to play the game while he betted. That is viveka.

Dharmaraj also could have thought similarly and offered that I, his cousin, would play on his behalf. If Shakuni and I had played the game of dice, who do you think would have won? Can he roll the numbers I am calling or would I roll the numbers he is asking. Forget this. I can forgive the fact that he forgot to include me in the game. But, without viveka, he did another blunder. He prayed that I should not come to the hall as he did not want me to know that through ill-fate he was compelled to play this game. He tied me with his prayers and did not allow me to get into the hall; I was just outside the hall waiting for someone to call me through their prayers. Even when Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva were lost, they were only cursing Duryodhana and brooding over their fate; they forgot to call me. Even Draupadi did not call me when Dusshasan held her hair and dragged her to fulfil his brother’s order. She was also arguing in the hall, based on her own abilities. She never called me. Finally good sense prevailed; when Dusshasan started disrobing her, she gave up depending on her own strength, and started shouting ‘Hari, Hari, Abhayam Krishna, Abhayam’ and shouted for me. Only then I got an opportunity to save her modesty. I reached as soon as I was called. I saved her modesty.

Is there any hope of Krishna’s loving protection for a falling down devotee ?

My dear Uddhava, if  My devotee has not fully conquered his senses,  he may be harassed by material desires, but because of his unflinching devotion for Me (Lord Krishna), he will not be defeated by sense gratification.

…But even though one’s senses are not fully conquered, one who has unflinching devotion forLord Krishna does not run the risk of being separated from Him.  The words  Pragalbhayabhaktya indicate a person who has great devotion for Lord Krishna, and not one who desires to commit sinful activities and chant Hare Krishna to avoid the reaction.  Because of  previous bad habits and immaturity, even a sincere devotee may be harassed by lingeringattraction to the bodily concept of life; but his unflinching devotion for Lord Krishna will act.  SrilaVisvanatha Cakravarti Thakura gives the following two examples.  A great  warrior may be struck by the weapon of his enemy, but because of his courage and strength he is not killed or defeated.  He accepts the blow and goes on to victory.  Similarly, one may contract a seriousdisease, but if he takes the proper medicine he is quickly cured.

If those who follow the impersonal system of speculation and austerity deviate even slightlyfrom their path, they fall down.  A devotee, however, even though immature, never  falls from the path of  devotional service.  Even if he displays occasional weakness, he is still considered a devotee  if his devotion to Lord Krishna is  very  strong.  As the Lord states in Bhagavad Gita (9.30) : “Even if one commits the most abominable actions, if he is engaged in devotionalservice he is to be considered saintly because  he is properly situated”.

Srimad Bhagavatam, 11.14.18.
