Siddhis Vedas

Lord Krishna showed Uddhava the place where Svayambhuva Manu performed austerities. He explained how the eight mystical perfections stay there, embodied in the guise of young women.

Later Lord Krishna showed the city of Vedanagara in Jambudwipa, where the Vedas manifested themselves in their personified form. There the goddess Sarasvati, relentlessly praising the Lord, holding the book and sitar. All the apsaras living there are trying satisfy the Vedas with their dancing. I myself (Narada) along with Tumbura and other gandharvas sing the glories of the Lord there. Eighteen talas, seven swaras and three gramas appeared there in their personified forms. Thus, all kinds of musical ragas and their spouses-raginis are manifested there in their personified forms. Ragas, raginis and the personified Vedas offered eloquent prayers to Krishna

Nanda and Yasoda

At Brindavan, Nanda and Yashoda welcome him, with a smiling face, but with emptiness in their heart, because they miss Krishna.  Uddhava was fed and let to rest.

Yashoda Ma starts, ‘Uddhava, I switched off this stove the day Krishna left for Mathura. It has never been switched on since!  Whenever I switched it on, Krishna ran around me asking for milk.  The joy is simply inexplicable Uddhava! ’

‘This is the mortar in which I bound Krishna.  This is the rope I used…. This is the dress I got him for Diwali last year…. Even when he slept, he wouldn’t let  go of his flute.. see now he has left that back too… What is he doing in Mathura?  Is he still grazing cattle?’

Nanda Baba interjected, ‘Are you mad? Why would he graze cattle when he has had his education?  He must be a king now!’

Uddhava is spellbound by their love for Krishna.

left

King Parikshit asked Sage Shuka about how it was that Uddhava alone remained while all the Yadus and even Sri Krishna left. It was Sri Krishna’s wish that since it was only Uddhava who had the purity of mind to receive the full knowledge about the self, he was asked to stay on and impart it to the world.

Mind Modes Karma

In Srimad Bhagavatam, Lord Krishna tells Uddhava the story of a rich, but stingy merchant of Avanti, said P.T. Seshadri, in a discourse.

When the merchant lost all his wealth, he realised the impermanence of wealth,

turned over a new leaf and became a sanyasi.

But people did not believe he was a true sanyasi, for they remembered how wicked he had been.

They grabbed his danda, polluted his food, tore his garments and beat him up.

Yet, he ignored all this and continued with his meditation.

When asked how he could be indifferent to such cruelty, he said, “For my sorrow or joy, my body is not the reason. God is not the reason either. My atma is not the reason. It is my mind that is the Reason for joy or sorrow. The manas, trapped in the three Modes, makes us do karmas, So, we become attached to the world.”

The man who questioned the sanyasi then asked him how to control the mind. The sanyasi replied: “Do your svadharma. Daana is important. So, give generously to others.  Sing the names of the Lord. Nama sankeerthana is important. All these actions will calm the mind.

The senses are under the control of the mind. So, if you do not control the mind, you cannot control the indriyas. If you bite your tongue, which of your indriyas can be blamed for the pain you experience — the tongue or the teeth? Neither of them is at fault. Likewise, if you do not control your mind, can you blame others for your plight? Sorrows that result because of your actions cannot be blamed on others.

If you do not control mind, you will treat others with discrimination.

You will see some as friends and some as enemies. Only one who has controlled his mind will take to the right path, and seek moksha.”
